Hong Kong Startups Partner to Launch Next-Generation Sustainable Vending Machines

HONG KONG, April 23, 2025 — In a groundbreaking collaboration, three local companies—food preservation pioneer IXON, vending machine supplier Oveser, and temperature-control specialist HakkoBako—have signed an agreement to develop cutting-edge vending machines that redefine convenience, efficiency, and sustainability. This collaboration leverages IXON's advanced food preservation technology, enabling vending machines to stock never-before-seen products such as barbeque pork, poached chicken and roast duck, as well as premium ready meals at ambient temperature—eliminating the need for energy-intensive refrigeration. HakkoBako's precision temperature control ensures product safety and freshness throughout the supply chain.

"Traditional vending machines consume between 2,500-3,500 kWh annually just to keep products frozen," noted Warton Chieng, director of Oveser. "Our redesigned machines will require only minimal power for the user interface and dispensing mechanism. This partnership enables us to leapfrog incremental improvements and create a truly revolutionary product."

The first pilot machines will debut in MTR stations and shopping centres in Q4 2025, with plans to expand across Asia. This initiative showcases Hong Kong's vibrant startup ecosystem, fostering collaboration to tackle global sustainability challenges while creating exportable technologies with significant commercial potential across Asia and beyond.

The new vending machines will offer Hong Kong's most beloved local flavors with unprecedented convenience. Office workers can now enjoy authentic Cantonese classics like char siu (Cantonese-style barbecue pork) and siu mei (traditional roasted meats) at any time of day, while students and tourists can discover premium local cuisine without the wait times or price tags of traditional restaurants—all while supporting a more sustainable food distribution system.
